My Money Choices Badge.

Today the girls were introduced to the concept of money, as it relates to our cookie sale

The pig badge will be ironed on right above the pocket of the tunic all the way to the left

We talked about different types of coins , and we briefly discussed what we would want to spend our cookie money on. Meghan and Sasha gave the girls a few ideas- and later on we will officially vote. Meghan was able to chart our cookie goals so the girls can really visualize how close we are to making our money goals. We reminded the girls that: Sometimes the things we might enjoy doing with our families or Girl Scouts cost money! If you really want that .... you will need to save that much money! We also spoke about what are needs and what are wants.

We did an activity to help illustrate the difference between needs and wants! We used our somewhat open space to play a movement game. I was able to designate one side of the room as “Needs” and another as “Wants.” One by one, I was able to call out items and ask if it’s a need or want and ask the girls to move to the “Needs” or “Wants” side. I used this list: Food

House

Car

Clothes

Toys

Broccoli

Chocolate

Television

Soap

Shoes

Tennis

Basketball

Video games

Teddy bear

Pillow

Gloves

Boots

Medicine

Once we finished going through the list we were able to reflect together. • I explained that usually when we give money or items to people, it should be for their needs. • Should we buy someone a TV if they don’t have a house? • Should we give them a chocolate bar if they don’t have milk and bread? • Remind them that it’s also nice to give people wants on special occasions, because everybody has wants.

We Read The Four Money Bears, Mac Gardner. The Four Money Bears teach kids the four basic functions of money. We joined Spender Bear, Saver Bear, Investor Bear, and Giver Bear as they taught us ways to use money. When they work together they learn to build a budget and teach each other how to better manage their money today and for the future. Children need to be taught the four basic functions of money: Spend, Save, Invest, and Give. Each bear represents a function of money and shows how money works to help us accomplish our goals.

The girls made a three part wooden heart bank. Each girl was given paint pens, slick sticks, gems and stickers. The bank's three parts include: Save, spend and Share. This is an engaging learning tool that can bolster fiscal responsibility by simplifying financial concepts for our girls.
