Uses Resources Wisely Petal

The green petal covers being diligent in taking and using the resources we have around us.

Today the girls were able to learn all about our local environment with a special visit from The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor; with local mother Michelle Lapinel. The goal of the Coalition is "to foster increased awareness of environmental issues and encourage public participation in local conservation efforts."

Prior to the visit the girls learned all about how oysters act as filter feeders to clean our water and form protective reefs that shield us from floods. The CSHH has worked planting and maintaining several oyster beds around Hempstead Harbor in order to promote cleaner water in our area.

We read Olly The Oyster by Elaine Ann Allen. The story weaves the tale of a little oyster and his job of cleaning the bay, and why it's important. Even though Olly is small- he is mighty!

The girls also watched a short clip:

where school children from Oregon explain how oysters

work to make their bay cleaner.

We ended the day with handmade oyster keychains. All in all, a great way to earn our green petal!

A giant thank you to all our grownups who helped us donate to The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor, whom graciously gave us their time!
